Tangle Tunic

Silk rouleaux, silk organza

This garment features a repeating pattern created by hand appliquéd silk rouleaux. The tunic’s linear design is a meditation on the circuitous and complicated nature of lineage and the particular disorientation that is felt when one has little to no knowledge of their ancestors and histories.

Tar Baby Floral Diptych

Gouache on Paper

These paintings are based on Toni Morrison’s Tar Baby. The story takes place in the Caribbean and uses the symbolism between the indigenous flora and the delicate hothouse flowers of the white landowner as a reference to colonialism, white entitlement, and appropriation. The flowers in the painting are a mix of both native and non-native, but the former are layered over the latter. This portends the fate of the white family and their estate on the Caribbean Island and celebrates cultural resilience in the face of erasure.
